Instant Pot Duo vs Duo Plus (6 Qt): Is the Upgrade Worth It?

Short answer: The Duo, for most people. It cooks the same core meals with the same pot and has the stronger owner record. Get the Duo Plus if you want sous vide or a display that shows which stage it's in.

You’re looking at two nearly identical stainless cylinders. Same 6 quarts, same 1000 W, same pot. The Plus costs more and does more. So the real question isn’t which is better on paper, but whether you’ll ever use the additional functions often enough to justify the premium.

The deciding difference

It’s sous vide. That’s the one function the Plus has that you can’t fake on the Duo. Sterilize is convenient for baby bottles and canning jars, but a pot of boiling water accomplishes the same thing. The two additional presets are simply shortcuts to settings you could program manually.

If you don’t know what sous vide is, or you’ve never wanted to cook a steak in a water bath for two hours, the Duo does everything you’ll use.

Where they differ

The screen. The Plus displays whether it’s preheating, cooking or keeping warm, with separate indicators for temperature and pressure. On the Duo, a new owner can stare at “On” for 15 minutes and wonder if it’s broken. That’s when it’s coming up to pressure. Reviewers at Reviewed found the Duo the slowest to pressurize in their group, and its display does nothing to reassure you while you wait.

Spare rings. Silicone sealing rings absorb odors, and a ring that’s been through a curry will flavor your yogurt. The Plus ships with 2 spares. Duo owners typically end up buying them separately anyway.

The pot. Both use 18/8 stainless with a tri-ply bottom. Instant Pot describes the Plus pot as anti-spin, meaning it stays stationary while you stir vigorously during sauté.

What owners say

The Duo’s numbers are hard to beat. 26,257 of 27,070 performance mentions are positive, or 97%. Versatility runs 96%, taste 96%, and the weakest major topic is value at 87%.

The Duo Plus is close on cooking. Performance sits at 92%, speed at 90% and versatility at 96%. The outlier is durability: 435 of 622 mentions are negative. Amazon’s summary of those reviews also talks about meat falling apart, which is a cooking complaint rather than a broken machine, so the true failure rate is probably lower than 70%. Still, it’s the one topic where the cheaper model wins clearly.

Five-star share tells the same story: 84% for the Duo, 83% for the Plus, and one-star reviews at 3% versus 4%.

Our pick

Buy the Instant Pot Duo 6 Qt unless sous vide is on your list. It’s the most proven multicooker on Amazon and it makes the same rice, beans and stews. The Duo Plus is the better buy for a cook who wants a clearer screen and will use the extra modes. Check the current price on both, because the gap between them changes often.

FAQ

Do the Duo and Duo Plus cook differently?

Not in any way that matters day to day. Both are 6-quart, 1000 W cookers with an 18/8 stainless tri-ply pot and an Easy-Release steam switch. The Plus adds functions and a better screen, not more cooking power.

Do accessories fit both?

Both are 6-quart Instant Pots, and most 6-quart accessories such as steamer baskets, spare rings and glass lids are sold for the whole 6-quart family. Check the product page of any accessory for your exact model before you order.

Can the Duo do sous vide?

There's no sous vide mode on the Duo. Its seven functions are pressure cook, slow cook, sauté, steam, rice, yogurt and warm. The Duo Plus adds sous vide and sterilize.

How we put this together

We compared manufacturer specs and Amazon listing details, read the patterns in Amazon owner reviews (we refresh this snapshot regularly), and scored each product with our published rubric. We have not tested these units hands-on. When we do, the page will say so. Prices change constantly, so we link to the live price instead of quoting one.
