A smart humidifier sounds like overkill until you’ve woken up at 6 a.m. to a room at 70% humidity and fogged-up windows. A humidistat fixes that by holding a target you choose. Both of these have one, both fill from the top, and both talk to an app, so features won’t decide this. Room size will, along with how often you’re willing to carry a full tank from the sink.

The deciding difference: room size

TechGearLab tested the HM311S. Starting at 40% humidity, it raised the test room by 8.7 points in an hour, and the reviewers concluded it isn’t enough for large rooms. On low it ran about 41.6 hours, beating DREO’s own claim. They also rated it among the easiest humidifiers to clean, scoring it 9 out of 10 thanks to a smooth tank with no crevices.

The Levoit lists 320 ml of mist an hour from a tank more than 50% bigger, and that’s the whole case for it in a big room. We couldn’t find an independent lab test of it yet. Levoit announced it in June 2026, so some of the listing’s 45,401 ratings may come from earlier models sold on the same page.

Noise

Owners give the DREO a clear edge: 96% of its 515 quiet-operation mentions are positive, against 88% of 1,903 for the Levoit. The box numbers are another story. TechGearLab measured the DREO at 41 dB with a low whine, well above the 28 dB it claims, so treat every humidifier noise figure as a best case rather than what you’ll actually hear from your pillow.

What owners say

Both work. Effectiveness is 88% positive for the Levoit, and DREO owners rate ease of use at 94%.

The weak spots are the same on both, and they’re serious. Leakage is 91% negative for the Levoit and 88% for the DREO, while durability sits at 70% and 78% negative. Levoit owners are also split on cleaning, with 38% of 1,202 mentions negative despite the detachable, dishwasher-safe tray. And 35% say the mist doesn’t raise humidity as much as they’d hoped.

Our pick

For a bedroom, get the DREO HM311S. Owners say it’s quieter, it’s easy to keep clean, and 4 liters lasts well past a night. For a living room or an open-plan space, the Levoit NeoClassic 650S makes more sense, since its bigger tank and higher output are built for exactly that. With either one, put a tray or towel underneath for the first week.

FAQ

Do these humidifiers leak?

Leaks are the biggest complaint for both. 91% of 817 leakage mentions for the Levoit and 88% of 231 for the DREO are negative. Seat the tank carefully after every refill and keep it off wood furniture until you trust it.

Do I need the app?

Both work from buttons on the unit. The app adds schedules and remote control. TechGearLab listed needing the app for some functions as a downside of the DREO.

How long does the DREO HM311S run on one tank?

DREO claims up to 36 hours. TechGearLab measured about 41.6 hours on low.

Can I use tap water?

You can, but both are ultrasonic, so minerals in hard water come out as fine white dust. Distilled water avoids that and slows scale in the tank.

How we put this together

We compared manufacturer specs and Amazon listing details, read the patterns in Amazon owner reviews (we refresh this snapshot regularly), and scored each product with our published rubric. We have not tested these units hands-on. When we do, the page will say so. Prices change constantly, so we link to the live price instead of quoting one.
