The best-selling over-ear headphones on Amazon right now aren’t Bose or Sony. They’re the Soundcore Q20i and a BERIBES pair with no noise cancelling at all, which tells you most shoppers want comfort and battery first. We agree with them more than you’d think. But spend a little more and the gains are real, especially in noise cancelling.

How we chose

We pulled owner topic data from 17 of Amazon’s top over-ear listings and cross-checked comfort, noise cancelling and battery against TechGearLab’s lab scores and SoundGuys’ measurements. Battery claims got special scrutiny, because listed numbers vary widely from what labs record.

The picks in detail

Bose QuietComfort is the one to buy if you’ll wear headphones for hours. TechGearLab scored it 73 overall, with an 8.6 for comfort and about 27 dB of average noise reduction. Owners agree on comfort. Two caveats: calls are weak (TechGearLab gave them 4.0), and the lab measured just under 23 hours of battery, a bit short of Bose’s 24.

Soundcore Q20i is the budget default. It’s Amazon’s #1 over-ear seller, and 93% of 2,372 value mentions are positive. TechGearLab called its ANC surprisingly strong for the price but found the sound flat. See our full Q20i review.

Sony WH-CH720N is the light one. At 192 g it barely registers on your head, and SoundGuys measured 40 hours 11 minutes with ANC on. Its noise cancelling is the catch: SoundGuys found about 20 dB of reduction, and TechGearLab rated it below average. Durability complaints make up 62% of 390 owner mentions.

TOZO HT3 won TechGearLab’s award for the tightest budget, scoring 66 overall, just ahead of the Sony. Testers wore it about 7.5 hours before needing a break. Its ANC is weak on high-pitched sound.

JLab JBuds Lux ANC is for people who hate charging. Owners rate the battery 94% positive. TechGearLab was cooler on it overall, scoring it 59 and noting weaker comfort and ANC.

Audio-Technica ATH-M20x is a wired monitor for home recording or podcasting. Owners love the value but 53% of comfort mentions are negative, often about ear pressure.

BERIBES 65H is fine for a dorm or office. Just know there’s no ANC.

iClever HS19 suits young kids, though 62% of durability mentions report breakage.

Who should skip what

If you mainly want headphones for calls, none of the ANC picks here are great at it; a headset with a boom mic will serve you better. And if the Beats Studio Pro is on your list, read our Bose QuietComfort vs Beats Studio Pro comparison first.

FAQ

Is Bose or Sony better for noise cancelling?

At the flagship level it's close, but among the models here, the Bose QuietComfort clearly beats the cheaper Sony WH-CH720N. TechGearLab measured about 27 dB of average reduction for the Bose against roughly 13 to 31 dB across bands for the Sony.

Are cheap noise cancelling headphones any good?

For steady droning noise like a plane cabin or air conditioner, yes. The Soundcore Q20i and TOZO HT3 handle that well. They're weaker on higher-pitched noise and voices than premium models.

How many hours of battery do I really need?

Around 25 to 30 hours covers a week of commuting or a long-haul trip. Anything past 40 hours is a bonus, not a reason to buy.

Are over-ear headphones safe for kids?

Choose a pair with a volume limit. The iClever HS19 caps output at 85 dBA, and the Candy Bila and Botesty kids pairs offer an 85 or 94 dB switch.

How we put this together

We compared manufacturer specs and Amazon listing details, read the patterns in Amazon owner reviews (we refresh this snapshot regularly), and scored each product with our published rubric. We have not tested these units hands-on. When we do, the page will say so. Prices change constantly, so we link to the live price instead of quoting one.
