On paper these two are twins. Both are premium noise cancellers from big brands, and both hover at 4.5 stars on Amazon with more than 22,000 ratings each. Put them on your head for a long flight, though, and they stop being twins within an hour or two.

The deciding difference: comfort

TechGearLab’s testers wore the Bose for about 9 hours before wanting a break. The Beats managed about 3.5 to 4. Their comfort scores were 8.6 and 3.7 out of 10. That’s a huge gap. Huge. The lab blamed stiff foam and a strong clamp on the Beats, and also noted that the hinges catch long hair and press on glasses.

Owners say much the same thing in their own way, and since Amazon sorts comments into slightly different buckets for each model, it’s worth looking at both comfort and fit before drawing a conclusion. 86% of 1,426 Bose comfort mentions are positive. On the Beats, 40% of fit mentions are negative.

Where else they differ

Noise cancelling. The Bose blocked about 27 dB on average in TechGearLab’s measurements, against roughly 17 dB for the Beats. The difference is largest in low frequencies, the engine rumble you hear on planes: 23.3 dB versus 5.5 dB. Digital Trends also found the Beats’ ANC behind older Bose and Sony flagships.

Sound. TechGearLab scored them nearly level, 7.2 for Bose and 7.3 for Beats. SoundGuys found the Bose bass-heavy with a sharp treble peak, and its app gives you only a basic EQ. The Beats have no adjustable EQ at all.

USB-C and Apple features. Here the Beats fight back. Plug in a USB-C cable and they play lossless audio up to 24-bit/48 kHz, according to Digital Trends, which found more detail that way. iPhone owners also get head-tracked Spatial Audio. The Bose has no USB-C audio, and both use only the SBC and AAC Bluetooth codecs.

What owners say

Durability separates them. 69% of 804 Beats durability mentions are negative, many about the headband cracking. Digital Trends flagged the same risk, since the materials carried over from the older Studio 3. Bose’s weak topic is value, with 41% of 1,012 mentions saying it costs too much.

Neither is flawless on connections. 44% of Bose connectivity mentions are negative, and 46% of Beats reliability mentions are too, often about one side cutting out.

Our pick

The Bose QuietComfort. It’s lighter. It’s quieter. And you can wear it through a full workday or a transatlantic flight without counting the minutes until you can take it off. Choose the Beats Studio Pro if USB-C lossless and Spatial Audio matter more to you than comfort, and try them on first. For more options at every budget, see our best over-ear headphones guide.

How we put this together

We compared manufacturer specs and Amazon listing details, read the patterns in Amazon owner reviews (we refresh this snapshot regularly), and scored each product with our published rubric.
