AirPods 4 vs AirPods Pro 3: Is the Pro Worth the Extra Money?
Short answer: Pro 3, if you want noise cancelling or AirPods that stay put. AirPods 4 only make sense if ear tips bother you and open-fit buds already work for you.
AirPods 4
4.5★ · 35,971 ratings
- You dislike silicone ear tips and want an open, airy fit
- You don't need noise cancelling
- Older AirPods have always stayed in your ears
AirPods Pro 3
4.4★ · 17,097 ratings
- You want strong noise cancelling for commutes or flights
- Regular AirPods fall out of your ears
- You'd use heart-rate tracking, hearing features or Live Translation
Apple’s lineup looks confusing, but for most buyers this comparison comes down to one physical difference: ear tips.
AirPods 4 have no tips. They rest in your outer ear, the classic AirPods shape. AirPods Pro 3 seal into your ear canal with silicone tips in five sizes, and nearly everything else in this comparison, from how much noise they block to whether they survive a run to the train, follows from that one design choice.
Fit: the number that decides it
In Amazon owner reviews, fit is the most telling topic:
- AirPods 4: about 1,290 fit mentions, and only ~34% positive.
- AirPods Pro 3: about 750 fit mentions, ~64% positive.
If open-fit AirPods have always stayed in your ears, the AirPods 4 numbers don’t apply to you. For everyone else, a tip-less earbud is a gamble. The Pro 3’s tips are the reason far more owners describe them as secure enough to forget about while walking, working out or turning their head on a crowded bus.
Noise cancelling
The AirPods 4 in this comparison have no ANC. Apple does sell an AirPods 4 with ANC separately, but physics gets in the way: an open design that doesn’t seal your ear canal simply can’t block as much sound as tips can.
AirPods Pro 3 have Apple’s strongest noise cancelling. Apple claims up to 2× more noise removed than AirPods Pro 2. Owners agree it’s a strength: about 87% of noise-cancellation mentions are positive.
Battery
- AirPods 4: up to 5 hours per charge, 30 hours with the USB-C case.
- AirPods Pro 3: up to 8 hours with ANC on.
Owner feedback on battery is mixed for both (53% and 55% positive), so don’t buy either expecting all-day listening in one go.
Extras only the Pro 3 has
- Heart-rate sensing for workouts, including calories, with iPhone’s fitness features.
- Hearing health tools: a hearing test, the Hearing Aid feature and hearing protection.
- Live Translation, powered by Apple Intelligence.
Our pick
AirPods Pro 3. The price gap is real, but you get noise cancelling, a secure fit for far more ears, longer battery and several features the AirPods 4 lack entirely. Pick AirPods 4 only if ear tips are a deal-breaker. Even then, make sure you already know open-fit AirPods suit you.

Sound and call quality get good marks. Fit is the deal-breaker: two out of three fit mentions are negative, because the tip-less design doesn’t stay put for everyone.

How we put this together
We compared manufacturer specs and Amazon listing details, read the patterns in Amazon owner reviews (we refresh this snapshot regularly), and scored each product with our published rubric. We have not tested these units hands-on. When we do, the page will say so. Prices change constantly, so we link to the live price instead of quoting one.
